Alligator Sightings at Tybee Island Beach

2 Alligators Spotted Ahead of Labor Day Weekend

Tybee Island, GA (August 30, 2023)

With Labor Day weekend just around the corner, beachgoers are being warned to be aware of alligators after two were spotted on Tybee Island beach.

The first alligator, a 6-foot male, was spotted on Saturday morning near the pier. The second alligator, a 4-foot female, was spotted on Sunday afternoon near the dunes.

Both alligators were removed from the beach by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). No one was injured in either incident.

"We're asking people to be aware of their surroundings and to take precautions to avoid encounters with alligators," said DNR spokesman Mark Garland. "Alligators are apex predators, and they can be dangerous."

Here are some tips to avoid alligator encounters:

If you are bitten by an alligator, seek medical attention immediately. Alligator bites can be serious and can lead to infection or even death.
