In Cherkessk, a gas explosion destroyed the second floor of a residential building, injuring at least five people, including a three-year-old child. It is reported by TASS with reference to the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Karachay-Cherkess Republic.

The explosion occurred on January 20, 2023, at about 06:50 Moscow time, in a two-story residential building located on Krasnykh Partizan Street. The explosion completely destroyed the second floor, under the rubble of which people may remain. According to preliminary data, the explosion occurred due to a gas leak.

The investigative authorities of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Karachay-Cherkess Republic initiated a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under Part 3 of Art. 216 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (violation of safety rules during the operation of explosive objects).

As a result of the explosion, five people were injured, including a 3-year-old child who is in serious condition. All victims were taken to the city hospital.

The circumstances of the incident are being investigated, the perpetrators are being established.
