St. Louis Cardinals Fire Manager Oliver Marmol

Departure Follows Disappointing Season

The St. Louis Cardinals have fired manager Oliver Marmol after three seasons at the helm. The move comes after a disappointing 2023 campaign that saw the Cardinals finish with a 79-83 record and miss the playoffs.

Marmol's Tenure

Marmol, 36, was named Cardinals manager in 2020 after serving as the team's bench coach under Mike Shildt. He led the Cardinals to a 90-72 record in his first season and won the National League Manager of the Year award.

However, the Cardinals struggled in 2022 and 2023, finishing with losing records both years. The team's offense was particularly anemic, ranking near the bottom of the league in several offensive categories.

Possible Replacements

The Cardinals have not yet announced a replacement for Marmol. However, several potential candidates have been mentioned, including former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and current New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

La Russa, 79, managed the Cardinals from 1996 to 2011, winning two World Series titles. He returned to the team in 2022 as a senior advisor to the general manager.

Boone, 49, has managed the Yankees since 2018. He has led the team to two American League East titles and one American League pennant.
