Elchin Amirbekov Discusses COP29 with Senior UK Officials
Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Meets with British Counterparts
Collaboration on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies Explored
Elchin Amirbekov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, recently met with senior UK officials to discuss Azerbaijan's participation in the upcoming 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The meeting was held in London and attended by Lord Zac Goldsmith, Minister of State for the Pacific and the Environment, and other high-ranking UK government officials.
During the meeting, Minister Amirbekov highlighted Azerbaijan's commitment to addressing climate change and its active role in international efforts to mitigate and adapt to its impacts. He emphasized the importance of COP29, which will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, in November 2022, as a crucial platform for advancing global climate action.
The discussions between Minister Amirbekov and the UK officials focused on several key areas of collaboration, including the development of climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, sharing of best practices, and capacity building. The two sides expressed their mutual interest in exploring opportunities for joint projects and initiatives in these areas.
Minister Amirbekov also briefed the UK officials on Azerbaijan's progress in implementing its nationally determined contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. He highlighted the country's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote renewable energy, and enhance climate resilience.
Lord Goldsmith welcomed Azerbaijan's commitment to climate action and expressed the UK's support for the country's efforts. He reiterated the UK's commitment to working closely with Azerbaijan and other international partners to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.
The meeting between Minister Amirbekov and the UK officials was a positive step towards strengthening cooperation between the two countries on climate change. The discussions set the stage for future collaboration and joint initiatives to address this global challenge.
