‘Fantastic’ Chelsea star equals six-year N’Golo Kante record in 2-1 win vs Newcastle
Mason Mount matched N’Golo Kante’s record
Mason Mount has equalled N’Golo Kante’s six-year record at Chelsea following the Blues’ 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.
Mount opened the scoring at St James’ Park with a fine strike from the edge of the box in the 12th minute.
Chelsea had to fight
The Magpies pegged Chelsea back through Miguel Almiron’s deflected effort, but Kai Havertz poked home the winner from close range just before the hour.
Mount’s goal was his seventh of the season in all competitions, making him Chelsea’s joint-top scorer alongside Raheem Sterling.
It was also the England international’s 25th Premier League goal for the Blues, meaning he has now matched Kante’s record for the most goals scored by a midfielder for the club in the competition.
Kante, who left Chelsea to join Barcelona in the summer, scored his 25th Premier League goal for the Blues in a 3-0 win over Watford in December 2017.
Mount has been in good form
Mount has been in impressive form for Chelsea this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists in his last five Premier League appearances.
The 24-year-old’s performances have helped the Blues climb to fourth in the table, just two points behind leaders Arsenal.
Chelsea will be hoping that Mount can continue his good form when they face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday.
Conclusion
Mount has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent performers this season and his goal against Newcastle was another example of his quality.
The England international is now Chelsea’s joint-top scorer and he will be hoping to add to his tally when the Blues face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
