Horner on Perez's Future: Red Bull Will Have to Make a 'Tough Call'
Max Verstappen's Dominant Season Complicates Sergio Perez's Contract Situation
Sergio Perez's future with Red Bull Racing is uncertain, with team boss Christian Horner admitting that the team will have to make a "tough call" on whether to extend his contract beyond the end of the 2023 season.
Perez has been a solid performer for Red Bull since joining the team in 2021, winning two races and playing a key role in Max Verstappen's title success last year.
However, Verstappen's dominant season in 2022 has made it clear that he is the team's number one driver, and Perez has been unable to match his teammate's pace.
Red Bull's Options for Perez's Replacement
If Red Bull decides not to renew Perez's contract, several drivers could be in contention to replace him.
One option is Pierre Gasly, who has impressed at AlphaTauri, Red Bull's sister team.
Another possibility is Nyck de Vries, who won the Formula E championship in 2021 and has been linked with a move to Formula 1.
Perez's Performance in 2023 Will Be Crucial
Perez's future at Red Bull could hinge on his performance in the 2023 season.
If he can close the gap to Verstappen and challenge for race wins, he may be able to convince the team to keep him on board.
However, if he continues to struggle to match his teammate's pace, Red Bull may be forced to look for a replacement.
Horner: Decision Will Be Based on 'What's Best for the Team'
Horner insists that Red Bull's decision on Perez's future will be based on what is best for the team.
"We have a great relationship with Sergio," Horner said.
"But we also have to make a tough call on what's best for the team moving forward."
