Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Hits Off the Coast of Oregon
Major Earthquake Rattles Oregon Coast, No Tsunami Warning Issued
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Oregon on Friday, causing strong shaking in coastal communities but no reports of major damage or injuries. The quake hit at 10:39 a.m. PT about 80 miles west of Port Orford, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). It was felt as far away as San Francisco and Seattle.
There were no immediate reports of damage to buildings or infrastructure. However, the Oregon Department of Transportation closed several highways in the area for inspection. There were also no reports of injuries.
The quake was followed by several aftershocks, the largest of which was a magnitude 4.1. The USGS said there is a low probability of a larger earthquake occurring in the area in the next week.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a tsunami warning after the earthquake.
Oregon is located in a seismically active region, and earthquakes are relatively common. However, earthquakes of this size are rare. The last major earthquake to hit Oregon was a magnitude 6.9 quake in 1993 that caused widespread damage in Coos Bay.
Seismologists are still studying the data from the earthquake and will continue to monitor the area for aftershocks.
