Nebraska Football Officially Names Starting Cornerbacks for UTEP Tilt

With the highly anticipated 2023 season rapidly approaching, the University of Nebraska football program has officially announced its starting cornerbacks for the season-opening matchup against the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners.

After evaluating the talent and experience of the cornerback group throughout spring practice and fall camp, the coaching staff has identified two individuals who will take on the starting roles for the upcoming campaign.

Meet the Starters

Quinton Newsome

A seasoned veteran with a wealth of experience, Quinton Newsome is poised to lead the Nebraska secondary in his senior season. Since arriving in Lincoln, Newsome has consistently showcased his exceptional cover skills, quick reflexes, and ability to generate turnovers.

In 2022, Newsome started eleven games for the Cornhuskers, registering 44 tackles, four pass breakups, and a crucial interception. His leadership and experience will be invaluable to a young and hungry Nebraska defense.

Javin Wright

A rising star within the Cornhusker program, Javin Wright has impressed the coaching staff with his athleticism, instincts, and knack for making plays on the ball.

Wright, who transitioned from wide receiver to cornerback prior to the 2022 season, displayed his potential in limited action last year. He recorded 14 tackles, two pass breakups, and showcased his versatility by also contributing on special teams.

Preparation for UTEP

The Nebraska cornerbacks will face a significant test in their first game of the season, as UTEP boasts a talented and experienced quarterback in Gavin Hardison. Hardison, who holds several school records, is known for his accuracy, arm strength, and ability to extend plays with his mobility.
