Strong to Severe Storms Possible Throughout KMAland Wednesday
Severe Weather Outlook
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk for severe weather for much of KMAland Wednesday. The main threats will be damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain.
Timing
The storms are expected to develop ahead of a cold front that will move through the area Wednesday afternoon and evening. The greatest risk for severe weather will be between 3 pm and 9 pm.
Impacts
Damaging winds are the most likely threat from these storms. Winds could gust over 60 mph, which could cause damage to trees, power lines, and structures.
Large hail is also possible, with hail up to 2 inches in diameter possible. Hail can cause damage to vehicles, homes, and crops.
Heavy rain is also a threat, with some areas receiving over 2 inches of rain. Heavy rain can lead to flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
Preparation
There are several things you can do to prepare for severe weather:
- Have a plan for where you will go if a tornado warning is issued.
- Secure loose objects around your home and yard.
- Have a battery-powered radio and flashlights on hand.
- Fill your car's gas tank.
- Stay informed about the latest weather forecast.
If you see a tornado, take shelter immediately. The safest place to be is in a basement or underground shelter. If you are outside, lie down in a ditch or other low-lying area and cover your head with your hands.
