Terry Gar, actress from “Tootsie” and “Friends died at 77

Terry Gar, an American actress best known for her roles in “Tootsie” and “Friends”, died on December 2, 2022, at the age of 77.

Gar’s death was confirmed by her publicist, who said she died of natural causes.

Gar was born in Lakewood, Ohio, on December 11, 1944. She began her career in the theater, appearing in off-Broadway productions such as “The House of Blue Leaves”.

In 1982, Gar made her film debut in “Tootsie”, playing the role of Sandy Lester, a soap opera actress who falls in love with Dustin Hoffman’s character, Michael Dorsey.

Gar’s performance in “Tootsie” earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

In 1994, Gar joined the cast of the NBC sitcom “Friends”, playing the role of Phoebe Buffay's eccentric mother, Alice Knight.

Gar appeared in several episodes of “Friends” over the course of the show’s ten seasons.
