Tornadoes, Downpours Possible Across Iowa This Afternoon and Tonight
National Weather Service Issues Tornado Watch for Central and Eastern Iowa
***The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for central and eastern Iowa, effective until 10 p.m. CDT this evening. The watch includes the cities of Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Davenport.
The weather service warns that tornadoes are possible, along with damaging winds and large hail. Residents in the affected areas are urged to take precautions and be prepared to take shelter if necessary.
In addition to the tornado watch, the weather service has also issued a flash flood watch for much of central and eastern Iowa. The watch is in effect until 7 a.m. CDT Friday.
The weather service warns that heavy rain is possible, which could lead to flooding in low-lying areas. Residents in the affected areas are urged to be aware of the potential for flooding and to take precautions to protect their property.

If you are in the path of a tornado, the weather service recommends the following safety tips:

- Do not drive through flooded areas.
- Be aware of the potential for downed power lines and other hazards.
- If you must walk through floodwaters, use a stick to check the depth of the water before you step in.
