Wenham expresses disappointment over Phillips' lack of game time
Phillips has not started a Premier League game since August
Jamie Wenham has expressed his disappointment over the lack of game time given to Nat Phillips by Liverpool this season. The centre-back has not started a Premier League game since August and has only made one appearance in the Carabao Cup.
Wenham believes that Phillips deserves more opportunities
Wenham believes that Phillips deserves more opportunities and has questioned why he is not playing ahead of Joe Gomez. The former Tottenham defender said: "I'm a big fan of Nat Phillips. I think he's a very good defender. I don't understand why he's not playing ahead of Joe Gomez. I think he's a better defender than Gomez. He's more physical, he's more aggressive, and he's better in the air."
Phillips has been linked with a move away from Liverpool
With his lack of game time, Phillips has been linked with a move away from Liverpool. Newcastle United and Burnley are reportedly interested in signing the defender.
However, Wenham believes that Phillips should stay at Liverpool and fight for his place in the team. He said: "I think Nat Phillips should stay at Liverpool and fight for his place. He's a good enough player to play for Liverpool. He just needs to be given the chance.
Phillips has shown his quality for Liverpool in the past. He played well in place of Virgil van Dijk at the end of last season and helped Liverpool to reach the Champions League final. He also performed well in the Carabao Cup this season, keeping a clean sheet in the quarter-final against Leicester City.
It remains to be seen whether Phillips will be given more opportunities at Liverpool. Klopp has a number of options at centre-back and it is difficult to break into the team. However, Wenham believes that Phillips has the quality to play for Liverpool and deserves more game time.
