Wheelchair basketball has been a Paralympic sport since the first Games in Rome in 1960. It is one of the most popular and competitive sports at the Paralympics, with teams from all over the world competing for gold.

The Rules of the Game

Wheelchair basketball is played on a standard basketball court, with the same rules as able-bodied basketball. However, there are a few modifications to accommodate wheelchair users.

• Players must remain seated in their wheelchairs at all times.
• The ball can be dribbled with either hand, but it must be kept below the waist.
• Players can only take two steps without dribbling the ball.

The Classification System

Wheelchair basketball players are classified according to their level of disability. The classification system ensures that all players are competing on a level playing field.

There are eight different classes, ranging from 1.0 to 4.5. Players with a lower class number have a more severe disability.

The Paralympic Games
