Matt Chapman's Bases-Clearing Double Powers Oakland A's to Victory Over Boston Red Sox

What Happened?

On Sunday, May 15th, 2023, Matt Chapman hit a game-winning, bases-clearing double in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Oakland A's to a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox at the Coliseum.

A's Trail 3-0 Entering Ninth Inning

The A's entered the ninth inning trailing 3-0. Red Sox closer John Schreiber came on to try and close the game out, but he walked A's catcher Sean Murphy to start the inning.

Second baseman Nick Allen followed with a single to put runners on first and second with nobody out. That brought up Chapman, the A's third baseman and cleanup hitter.

Chapman Delivers Clutch Hit

Chapman fell behind 0-2 in the count but battled back to work the count full. On a 3-2 slider from Schreiber, Chapman hit a line drive down the left field line that rolled into the corner.

The double cleared the bases, scoring Murphy, Allen, and Seth Brown, who had pinch-run for first baseman Kevin Smith.
